India is advancing its defense capabilities by finalizing a Letter of Request (LoR) for 114 Rafale fighter jets from France, with the intention of enhancing its air power amid regional tensions with China and Pakistan. The deal is significant as it marks one of the largest fighter aircraft procurements in recent years, with plans for approximately 90 jets to be manufactured domestically through a partnership between French company Dassault Aviation and Indian manufacturers. This initiative aligns with India's goal of increasing indigenous defense production, with an expected local content of nearly 50%. The Indian Air Force (IAF) currently operates 36 Rafale jets and faces a shortfall of fighter squadrons, having only 29 against a sanctioned strength of 42. The acquisition aims to address this gap while also facilitating technology transfer, particularly in weapon integration. The contract is anticipated to be finalized by the end of this year, following detailed negotiations between India and France.
