In the ongoing counting of votes for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee (leader of the Trinamool Congress party) has expressed concerns over alleged irregularities. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reported to be leading in over 185 seats, suggesting a significant advantage. Banerjee released a video statement claiming that the Election Commission (EC) is intentionally slowing down the counting process to create a narrative favorable to the BJP. She accused the EC of manipulating the voter verification process and alleged that central agencies are being used to intimidate TMC workers and damage party offices. According to her internal assessments, only around 13% of votes have been counted so far. Despite the BJP's early lead, Banerjee urged her supporters to stay calm and confident, asserting, “Don’t be demoralised – we will win. By evening, the rounds will be over.” The counting process is still ongoing, with final results expected later in the day.
