During the unveiling of the Vikram VT21 armoured platforms in Ahilyanagar, Samir V Kamat, the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), expressed concerns regarding the low bids from industries seeking to become Development cum Production Partners (DcPP). He stated that such low valuations could undermine the process aimed at enhancing India's self-reliance in defense technologies. Kamat emphasized the importance of evolving a fair and transparent selection mechanism for DcPPs, which is crucial for the country's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The Vikram VT21, designed by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), features an indigenously developed 30 mm Crewless Turret and is a collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, along with various MSMEs. Kamat highlighted that over 60% of the vehicle is already indigenous, with plans to increase this percentage further before production begins. He also noted that the DRDO's role is not only in system design but also in developing critical technologies to minimize dependence on foreign sources.
