The electricity department in Goa is set to introduce prepaid options for smart electricity meters, allowing consumers to manage their usage similarly to mobile phone plans. As of now, approximately 15,000 traditional meters have been replaced with smart meters, which are currently being installed in areas such as Bambolim, Taleigao, and Panaji. The total cost of this modernization project is over ₹890 crore (approximately $107 million USD), with the state government covering ₹820 crore and the central government contributing ₹70 crore. While the initiative aims to enhance consumer experience through a user-friendly app that tracks consumption and facilitates payments, concerns have been raised by former bureaucrat Elvis Gomes regarding financial implications and data privacy. The electricity department insists that the meter replacement is necessary for modernizing infrastructure and improving service delivery under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The app is expected to be publicly available within 20 days, enabling consumers to switch to prepaid mode.
