Tensions escalated in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, on Friday when a group of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) workers allegedly attacked Congress functionaries during a protest. The Congress demonstration was part of a state-wide initiative condemning Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for not inviting Tamilga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay to form the government. This incident follows Congress's recent decision to support TVK, thereby breaking ties with DMK. The protest, led by Congress district president Banu Sekar, saw participation from over 50 members. Following the demonstration, a confrontation occurred at a tea shop on Kacheri Road, where DMK members, including district youth wing organiser Marudhu and former councillor Raghu, allegedly confronted Congress functionaries. Reports indicate that abusive language was exchanged, leading to a physical altercation where a local Congress member, Raja, was pushed to the ground. The DMK workers reportedly raised slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and desecrated the Congress flag. The police managed to bring the situation under control, and an inquiry into the incident is currently underway.
