Following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on May 4, Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the largest party with 108 seats but fell short of a majority in the 234-member assembly. In a bid to form a government, Vijay engaged in negotiations with various parties, including the Indian National Congress, which was the first to announce support on May 6, conditioned on keeping communal forces out of the alliance. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI (Marxist) also expressed their support, citing the need to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from gaining power, despite the BJP holding only one seat in the assembly. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) provided support while remaining within the DMK-led alliance, bringing the total to 120 voting MLAs. The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Arlekar, initially resisted inviting Vijay for the oath-taking ceremony, but after receiving confirmation of support, he agreed to proceed, with the ceremony planned for May 10.
