West Bengal is gearing up for the second phase of polling on 142 seats on Wednesday, with 1,448 candidates vying for election, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Suvendu Adhikari from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This election is critical for Banerjee as she seeks a fourth term, particularly in her contest from Bhabanipur, where she previously won. The first phase of polling recorded an impressive 92.72% turnout, the highest since India's Independence. In this phase, over 3.22 crore voters are eligible to vote, comprising 1.64 crore male and 1.57 crore female electors, along with 792 third-gender voters. Notably, 4.12 lakh first-time voters aged 18-19 will participate, while around 3,200 voters are aged 100 years and above. Ahead of the polling, authorities have detained 2,473 individuals identified as potential troublemakers to ensure a smooth election process. The results will be announced on May 4 alongside other states and Union Territories.
