Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, has established a Judicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee to evaluate the infrastructure requirements of courts nationwide. The committee is tasked with preparing a comprehensive report to advocate for a dedicated government allocation of ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 crore for judicial reforms. Justice Aravind Kumar will lead the committee, which includes judges from the Calcutta, Punjab and Haryana, and Bombay High Courts, as well as officials from the Central Public Works Department and the Supreme Court. This initiative comes in response to ongoing concerns regarding inadequate judicial infrastructure and the backlog of cases across courts. As of February, India has a sanctioned strength of 25,894 judges, but only 21,027 are currently working, with 22,712 court halls available. The committee will also explore technology-driven solutions to expedite case processing and improve facilities for all stakeholders in the justice system. Additionally, the Union Cabinet has approved an increase in the Supreme Court's sanctioned strength, marking the first expansion since 2019, which aims to further strengthen judicial infrastructure and ensure timely justice.
