Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the Indian government is close to finalizing new laws regarding seeds and pesticides, which are expected to be tabled in the upcoming session of Parliament. These laws aim to ensure the quality of agricultural inputs and combat the issue of spurious seeds and pesticides that often lead to significant crop losses. Speaking at a zonal agricultural conference in Lucknow, attended by various state representatives, Chouhan emphasized the need for a region-specific approach to agricultural planning, given India's diverse agro-climatic conditions. He highlighted that India is now self-sufficient in food grain production, being the world's largest producer of rice and a major wheat exporter. The minister outlined three key priorities: food security, enhancing farmers' income, and providing nutritious food, supported by a six-point strategy that includes boosting production and promoting crop diversification. Additionally, he raised concerns about the indiscriminate use of fertilizers and advocated for organic farming practices. Chouhan also mentioned initiatives like ‘Farmer ID’ registration to improve access to agricultural services and the need for broader coverage of Kisan Credit Cards to facilitate low-interest loans for farmers.
