A tragic case of medical negligence unfolded at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Trauma Centre in Varanasi, India, where 71-year-old Radhika Devi was mistakenly subjected to a partial hip replacement surgery instead of the intended spinal tumour operation. This incident occurred on March 7, 2023, due to a failure in patient identification protocols. Radhika Devi was in bed number 29 in the neuro department, while 82-year-old Radhika Singh, who was supposed to receive the hip surgery, was in bed number 17 in the orthopaedic department. After anaesthesia was administered, the surgical team realized the error when the operative site did not match expectations. Although the operation was halted and Radhika Devi was returned to her ward, she subsequently underwent the correct spinal surgery on March 18. Unfortunately, she developed multiple complications and passed away on March 28. Following the incident, her family filed a complaint, prompting an investigation into the negligence. A committee was initially formed to probe the matter, but it was later restructured for transparency. The family is now seeking strict action against those responsible for the tragic outcome.
