A three-day Skill Development Workshop on Translation in Indian Languages, focusing on Kannada, Telugu, and Urdu, commenced at Davangere University on Tuesday. Organized by the Department of English in partnership with the National Translation Mission and the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), the workshop aims to enhance translation skills among participants. During the inauguration, writer and translator Anuradha P.M. discussed the historical evolution of translation, addressing its nature, scope, and the challenges faced by translators. B.L. Raju, a resource person, stressed that translation transcends mere linguistic conversion, highlighting the necessity for translators to possess a profound understanding of the cultural contexts of both languages involved. Scholar Meti Mallikarjun elaborated on the contributions of notable thinkers in translation studies, including Walter Benjamin and Gayatri Spivak. Usha Rani from the Indian Translation Mission informed attendees about various activities and opportunities provided by the National Translation Mission. The event was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Venkatesh K., with Registrar S.B. Ghanti and Dean Lokesh M.U. also in attendance. Fakkireesh Hallalli coordinated the event and welcomed the dignitaries.
