The Maharashtra state transport department has taken decisive action against private bus operators who impose arbitrary fare hikes and illegal booking applications that exploit commuters. Following numerous complaints, a special committee has been established to recommend long-term measures to regulate fare practices and curb overcharging, particularly during peak travel periods such as festivals and holidays. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized that such exploitation will not be tolerated, and strict measures will be enforced against offenders. The committee will also focus on improving passenger grievance redressal mechanisms and ensuring accountability from unauthorized booking apps. Furthermore, the government plans to enhance cleanliness at bus depots and provide free toilet facilities at all Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus stations starting June 1. Sarnaik reiterated the administration's commitment to maintaining high standards of hygiene and service for commuters.
