The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) suffered a huge defeat in Salem and Namakkal districts. The party and its alliance came third in 12 seats out of 17 seats contested in these two districts. Out of the 11 Assembly constituencies in Salem district, the AIADMK won seven seats- Edappadi, Omalur, Mettur, Gangavalli (R), Yercaucd (R), Sankari, and Attur (R). The AIADMK won in the constituencies that were predominantly rural. In the areas covering the city, the AIADMK and its alliance were defeated by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
