Gautam Adani's $1.2 billion copper plant, located in Kutch, Gujarat, India, has faced numerous technical challenges since its commissioning ten months ago. With a capacity of 500,000 tons per year, the plant has only managed to produce 94,000 tons of refined copper, raising concerns about its viability and impact on global copper supply. The facility was temporarily closed for repairs in March, and it remains unclear if operations have resumed. The plant's operational issues have been attributed to high levels of impurities in the copper concentrate feedstock, which have complicated the smelting process. Adani's procurement team is currently seeking cleaner copper concentrates to stabilize production. Despite these setbacks, Adani's spokesperson insists that the plant is making steady progress and has established long-term contracts with customers. Analysts from consultancies like CRU and Wood Mackenzie project that the plant could contribute between 175,000 tons and 385,000 tons of copper this year, highlighting its potential significance in the global market, especially as China dominates nearly half of the world's copper smelting.
