The Election Commission of India (ECI) reported that nearly 500,000 new voters were added to the electoral rolls of West Bengal between the final list publication on February 28 and the close of nominations. This increase stemmed from approximately 709,000 Form-6 applications, with about 500,000 applicants deemed eligible after verification. The total electorate in West Bengal now stands at 68.2 million, including over 34.9 million male voters, more than 33.3 million female voters, and 1,257 voters in the third gender category. District-wise, North 24 Parganas saw the highest growth with over 71,000 new voters, followed by Kolkata with nearly 44,000. However, these fresh enrolments have led to political disputes, particularly between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). TMC leaders accused BJP workers of submitting fraudulent applications to enroll outsiders, a claim the BJP denied, asserting that TMC was attempting to undermine the electoral process. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal indicated that complaints are under review and warned against submitting false applications. West Bengal will hold elections in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with potential for further voter roll additions as pending cases are resolved.
