P Sandosh Kumar, a lawmaker from the Communist Party of India (CPI), has formally accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during his televised address on state-funded channels, which aired on Saturday evening. The address, which occurred while elections are ongoing in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala, allegedly contained partisan comments aimed at influencing public opinion. Kumar highlighted that PM Modi's remarks targeted opposition parties, including the Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Samajwadi Party (SP), regarding the women's reservation bill. He argued that using state resources for a political speech constitutes a significant breach of electoral norms. Congress leader Anil Akkara echoed these concerns, stating that the Prime Minister misused his official position by naming contesting political parties. Former Chief Election Commissioners have pointed out the importance of ensuring equal access to media for all parties during elections, stressing that the current MCC does not guarantee opposition parties equal airtime. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has yet to respond to the complaints filed by Kumar and Akkara.
