The Mohali Consumer Commission has found S K Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Kharar, Punjab, and surgeon Dr. Gunraj guilty of medical negligence after a cotton gauze was left inside a woman's abdomen during a uterus surgery. The incident occurred on September 16, 2020, when Chanda, a 46-year-old resident of Kansal, Sonipat, sought treatment for abdominal pain. Following the initial surgery, her condition worsened, prompting a second operation on December 6, 2020, at a different hospital where the gauze was discovered, leading to severe infection and the removal of nearly 2.5 feet of her intestine. The Consumer Commission ordered the hospital and doctor to jointly pay ₹19.5 lakh (roughly $23,500 USD), which includes ₹9.25 lakh for medical expenses, ₹10 lakh for mental anguish, and ₹25,000 for legal costs. The commission emphasized the seriousness of the negligence, mandating reimbursement within 45 days and imposing interest penalties for late payment.
