Officeworks, a subsidiary of Wesfarmers, has announced the relocation of hundreds of IT and customer service jobs from Australia to India and the Philippines, specifically through its tech support brand Geeks2U. This decision, described as 'difficult,' is part of a significant business transformation program aimed at sustaining low prices amid rising operational costs and increasing competition. Affected employees at the western Sydney customer service center have been informed of their redundancy, with roles set to be replaced by call center staff in Manila. Additionally, other positions in Sydney and Melbourne will transition to Bengaluru in the coming months. The company emphasizes that the majority of its workforce will remain in Australia, with ongoing investments in local operations. Officeworks plans to enhance efficiency through AI and automation, having already established multi-year partnerships with tech giants Google and Microsoft. This trend of offshoring jobs is not unique to Officeworks, as other major corporations in Australia have similarly moved roles overseas.
