In a significant move to enhance the vehicle registration process, the Punjab government will allow automobile dealers to issue smart registration certificates (RCs) on the same day of vehicle purchase, starting in July. This initiative aims to address the longstanding issue of delays, as current practices only permit dealers to issue provisional RCs, with the official smart RCs taking weeks to arrive. The new system will grant dealers access to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to generate RCs on-site, utilizing designated printers. Currently, Punjab sees approximately 64,000 vehicle registrations each month, underscoring the necessity for a more efficient process. This reform builds on previous changes made in July 2022, when the e-registration certificate (e-RC) system was introduced, enabling online fee payments and instant registration number allotment. Additionally, the Punjab State Transport Society is set to enhance its Automated Driving Test Tracks at 32 centres, allowing applicants to receive their driving licenses on the same day they pass their tests, further reducing bureaucratic delays.
