In Prayagraj, rising summer temperatures have led to an increase in online shopping scams, with cyber fraudsters targeting consumers seeking air conditioners, coolers, and refrigerators. Three residents have reported losses totaling nearly ₹1.55 lakh due to deceptive social media advertisements promising significant discounts. Nirmala Singh fell victim to a Facebook ad offering a 40% discount on an air conditioner, resulting in a loss of ₹78,932 after her personal details were compromised. Similarly, Gudia Pal lost ₹48,000 through a fraudulent cooler exchange offer, while Mohammad Niaz lost ₹28,169 after responding to a scam involving a refrigerator. DCP Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, the nodal officer for the district Cyber Cell, warns that fraudsters exploit urgent consumer needs by promoting fake offers. He advises the public to be vigilant, avoid sharing personal information online, and to report suspicious advertisements. Investigations are underway to address these cases and raise awareness about online shopping safety.
