Around 1.7 million state government and semi-government employees, teachers, and non-teaching staff in Maharashtra, India have announced plans for an indefinite strike starting on April 21 if their demands are not addressed. The Employees’ Coordination Committee, representing various associations, has expressed frustration over the government's lack of action despite multiple protests and discussions over the past 15 months. Key demands include the implementation of a revised pension scheme, restoration of the old pension system for teachers, filling of vacant positions, and an increase in the retirement age to 60 years. The committee has criticized the government's failure to implement previously agreed social security benefits and has initiated a statewide awareness campaign to mobilize support for their cause. They are urging the government to establish a regular dialogue mechanism at the chief minister's level to expedite the resolution of these issues.
