The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has delayed its ruling on whether to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, following a petition from a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker alleging that he is a British national. The court indicated that it would not make a decision without issuing a notice to Gandhi, allowing him the opportunity to respond. The next hearing is scheduled for April 20. The petitioner, S Vignesh Shishir, claims that Gandhi declared himself a British citizen while involved with a company named ‘Backops Limited’ in the UK, thus raising concerns about his Indian citizenship. This matter was previously dismissed by a special MP-MLA court in Lucknow on January 28, which stated it lacked jurisdiction to address citizenship issues. The case was subsequently transferred to the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court from Rae Bareli in December 2025. The court's decision underscores the importance of allowing the accused an opportunity to be heard before any legal action is taken.
