The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 2% increase in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for state government employees and pensioners, raising the total to 60% of basic pay, effective from January 1, 2026. This adjustment will benefit approximately 16 lakh (1.6 million) employees and pensioners, who will also receive arrears for the period from January to April 2026. These arrears are expected to be credited to their General Provident Fund accounts. The revised DA is anticipated to be reflected in salaries paid out in June 2026. This decision follows similar announcements by the central government and other states, including Tamil Nadu and Odisha, which have also raised DA by 2%. In addition, employee unions are advocating for significant changes in the upcoming 8th Central Pay Commission, seeking an inflation-linked wage model and adjustments to the DA mechanism. The recommendations from this commission are projected to impact nearly 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners, including those from the railway and defense sectors.
