West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has mandated the disconnection of power and water supplies to all illegal buildings in the Kasba, Tiljala, Iqbalpur, and Mominpur areas of Kolkata following a tragic fire incident. The fire, which occurred in a leather goods factory in Tiljala, claimed the lives of two individuals and injured three others. In response, Adhikari instructed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to demolish the illegal structure within 24 hours. The building was found to be constructed without any sanctioned plan and did not adhere to fire safety norms. The owners of the factory, Sheikh Nasir and Shamim Muhammad, were arrested. The state government has also ordered the CESC (Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation) to identify and disconnect power to all unauthorized buildings in the region. Adhikari has warned that the government will adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal constructions, urging those involved to rectify their actions. This crackdown comes after previous incidents of fatal fires in illegal structures, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety in densely populated neighborhoods.
