Indian Railways (IR) has seen a significant increase in passenger numbers, with 741 crore passengers recorded in the financial year 2025-26, a rise of 3.54% from the previous year. To meet this growing demand, IR has implemented various measures, including the introduction of special trains and an automatic ticket upgradation system for waiting list passengers. This system, which allows passengers to upgrade to a higher class without additional charges, was first launched on January 26, 2006, initially available only on select trains. Over the years, it has expanded to include all Rajdhani Express trains and, as of April 1, 2014, all Mail and Express trains. Passengers can avail of this facility by selecting the ‘Consider for Auto Upgradation’ option while booking tickets through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website.
