The results of the 2026 Assembly elections have delivered a severe blow to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kollam, Kerala, marking the most significant decline in its power in over two decades. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has been reduced to a mere one seat in the entire district, a stark contrast to its previous dominance. This decline mirrors the party's struggles during the 2001 elections, forcing leaders to confront the loss of traditional voter loyalty and organizational strength. The Communist Party of India (CPI), which historically supported the coalition, has also faced a disastrous outcome, dropping from four seats in 2016 to just one in 2026. The loss of the Chathannur seat to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is particularly notable, as it was held for three terms by G.S. Jayalal. Additionally, Minister J. Chinchurani's defeat in Chadayamangalam, a constituency long aligned with the Left, underscores the shifting political landscape.
