Recent incidents have revealed that grey seals are killing and consuming dolphins in British waters, raising alarms about the safety of swimmers. A common dolphin was seen in the jaws of a grey seal in the Irish Sea near Dublin, and another dolphin was found dead on Newgale beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with distinct markings indicating a seal attack. Experts, including Cliff Benson from Sea Trust Wales, warn that seal bites can lead to severe infections, often necessitating amputations. This alarming trend has prompted warnings for swimmers to avoid contact with seals, which are wild predators capable of inflicting serious injuries. The increase in dolphin attacks may be linked to a growing population of common dolphins, which have surged eightfold along the Welsh coastline in the past eight years. This surge may have pushed dolphins into shallower waters, where they are more vulnerable to predation. Researchers suggest that this behavior is primarily exhibited by adult male grey seals, potentially as a learned behavior from previous interactions with marine mammals.
