Starting June 1, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal will launch several welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare and public transport. A key feature is the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat programme, which provides health insurance coverage to eligible families, following years of political disagreement. Additionally, the government plans to introduce the Annapurna Bhandar scheme, offering ₹3,000 (approximately $36 USD) to eligible women via direct benefit transfer, positioning it as an alternative to the existing Laxmir Bhandar scheme. Furthermore, women will be permitted to travel free on government-operated buses, benefiting many daily commuters, including students and working women. The government has assured that current welfare schemes will not be withdrawn, marking a significant welfare push by the newly formed administration.
