The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is implementing a registration initiative for informal waste collectors, issuing official ID cards as part of the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme. So far, 13,505 waste pickers have been surveyed, with the highest concentration in Shahdara North zone, which has 3,992 identified workers. This effort aims to enhance the recognition and social security of waste pickers, who play a crucial role in managing the city's waste, especially as daily municipal waste has risen to 12,847 tonnes. The MCD acknowledges that the current survey numbers are lower than the actual count of informal waste pickers. Alongside ID issuance, the program will provide training on safe waste disposal and segregation, ensuring that these workers are treated with dignity in their communities. The initiative aligns with the 2016 solid waste management rules, which mandate the inclusion of waste pickers in the formal waste management system.
