The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has issued a new expression of interest (EOI) to invite manufacturers to supply approved water meters, aiming to enhance billing efficiency and address complaints regarding faulty devices. Currently, Delhi has around 2.9 million metered connections, significantly lower than the 7.3 million electricity connections, resulting in revenue losses and consumer dissatisfaction. The last empanelment of water meter manufacturers took place nearly a decade ago, and the DJB is seeking to broaden options for consumers by allowing new manufacturers to apply by May 6. The new meters must conform to rigorous technical standards, including ISO 4064 certification, and will undergo testing at approved laboratories to ensure reliability. The DJB has also tightened specifications for meter materials to ensure durability and safety. Meanwhile, a recent scheme to regularize illegal water connections has garnered only about 2,500 applications, reflecting a lack of engagement from consumers. The DJB's efforts to revamp its metering system are crucial for improving billing transparency and reducing non-revenue water losses, which are estimated to be around 50-52% in Delhi's distribution network.
