The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has announced a comprehensive diplomatic agenda for May 2026, emphasizing India's role as the host of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) in New Delhi. This event will follow the last ministerial interaction at the United Nations General Assembly in late 2025. The MEA confirmed that the visiting Foreign Ministers will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, although the final attendee list remains undecided. India aims to solidify its leadership within the expanded BRICS bloc, emphasizing that any future growth or policy shifts will require unanimous agreement among member states.
Simultaneously, Prime Minister Modi will embark on a crucial five-nation tour from May 15 to 20, covering the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy, with a primary focus on energy security during his UAE visit. Discussions with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will center on strengthening fuel supply chains and addressing trade and investment concerns, particularly for the Indian diaspora.
The European leg of the tour will emphasize green energy and technology, with Modi attending the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, marking the first visit by an Indian PM to Norway in 43 years. Strategic discussions in the Netherlands and Italy will address semiconductors and green hydrogen initiatives.
Domestically, the MEA highlighted the Prime Minister’s call for national solidarity in light of the West Asian energy crisis, urging citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures. Additionally, the MEA provided updates on relations with neighboring countries, describing ties with Nepal as multifaceted and asserting positive engagement with Bangladesh.
