This clarification follows a viral video by financial influencer Sarthak Ahuja, who stated that starting April 1, 2026, individuals would need to visit an income tax officer prior to any international travel. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) labeled these claims as 'fake' and clarified that under Section 230 of the Income Tax Act, ITCCs are not mandatory for everyone but only for specific individuals involved in serious financial irregularities or those with direct tax arrears exceeding ₹10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD). This provision has been in effect since 2003 and remains unchanged despite recent amendments. The PIB's statement aims to prevent misinformation and ensure that citizens are aware of the actual requirements regarding tax clearance for international travel.
