Elangbam Johnson, the spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur, resigned on May 8, 2026, citing the party leadership's failure to resolve the ongoing ethnic crisis in the state. Johnson, who previously ran for a seat in the 2022 Assembly elections from the Keishamthong constituency, expressed that the BJP has been unable to convince the public of its capability to restore peace since the conflict erupted on May 3, 2023. This ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities has resulted in over 260 deaths and displaced approximately 62,000 individuals. Johnson criticized the BJP's state unit for its lack of independent decision-making power, particularly on critical issues affecting Manipur. In addition, various political parties and social organizations have condemned recent attacks on Tangkhul Naga villages, allegedly carried out by the Kuki National Army-Burma. They called for immediate government action to ensure civilian safety. In response, the Assam Rifles reported that they promptly intervened in the situation, securing affected areas and providing humanitarian assistance to rescued civilians. They also apprehended a suspected member of the NSCN(IM) during their operations, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining stability along the India-Myanmar border.
