In his latest works, photographer and filmmaker Sunhil Sippy explores the contrasting narratives of Mumbai through 'Raceday' and 'Eastward.' 'Raceday' is a photo essay featuring 150 images of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, capturing the intricate life of jockeys, horses, and the community surrounding this historic site. Sippy's journey began in 2013, and his work gained urgency as redevelopment plans emerged from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to transform the racecourse into a Grand Central Park. This project will retain 120 acres for public use while renewing the lease for 91 acres with the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). Critics, including the Mumbai Architects Collective, have voiced concerns about the project's impact on flood resilience and urban green space. In contrast, 'Eastward' focuses on the industrial heritage of Mumbai, showcasing 35 photographs that reflect on decay and the remnants of Sippy's grandfather's steel factory. Both projects serve as a poignant commentary on the city's ongoing transformation, emphasizing the need to preserve its cultural and historical essence.
