During a recent hearing, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court raised significant concerns regarding the shortage of ventilators in hospitals across Uttar Pradesh, India. Justices Rajan Roy and Manjive Shukla criticized the statistical claims about ventilator availability, stating that they hold little value if patients cannot access the equipment promptly. The court stressed the importance of ensuring adequate ventilator supply to prevent fatalities caused by shortages. It directed the state government to clarify how much of the state budget is allocated to healthcare and to provide an overview of the medical infrastructure status. Additionally, the court questioned whether a regulatory framework exists for private hospitals regarding treatment fees and service monitoring. Notices have been issued to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the central government, making them parties to the case, which is scheduled for further hearing on May 25. The court also called for the expansion of super-speciality healthcare facilities beyond Lucknow and noted that low salaries for government doctors contribute to a migration towards private hospitals, negatively impacting public healthcare services.
