On May 27, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) thanked India for its generous donation of emergency pharmaceutical supplies to aid the response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The supplies, which were received in Uganda, include vital diagnostics, therapeutics, and infection prevention materials that will be deployed to affected regions in eastern DRC. The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, highlighted the dire situation in Eastern DRC, where the Ebola outbreak is worsening amid ongoing conflict, complicating humanitarian access and containment efforts. As a precautionary measure, the Uganda People’s Defence Force has sealed the border with the DRC to prevent cross-border movement. Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in South Africa announced the development of a vaccine against a new strain of Ebola, which may also be effective against the Bundibugyo strain linked to the current outbreak.
