On Monday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda convened a high-level meeting to assess India's readiness against the Ebola Virus Disease, following recent outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The health ministry reported that South Sudan is currently at high risk of transmission. Nadda emphasized the need for stringent screening of travelers at all entry points into India, ensuring that health authorities remain vigilant. He directed the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to maintain preparedness for tracking, testing, and surveillance of the disease. Although no Ebola cases have been reported in India, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), while the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has labeled it a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security. As of May, there have been 85 confirmed cases and 10 fatalities in the affected regions. Ebola is a viral hemorrhagic fever with a high mortality rate, and currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments available for the disease.
