This approval triggers a 45-day countdown before commercial flight operations can commence, with a potential start date in June 2024. IndiGo is confirmed as the launch carrier, while Akasa Air and Air India Express are also set to operate flights. Initial domestic routes under consideration include Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, with international routes expected to follow as operations stabilize.
The airport is designed to handle 12 million passengers annually in its first phase, with plans to expand capacity to 70 million across four phases. The concession period for the airport, operated by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), began on October 1, 2021, and will last for 40 years. Recent leadership changes at YIAPL occurred following a decision by the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the eligibility of the Swiss CEO, Christoph Schnellmann. The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28 after receiving its aerodrome license.
