The Election Commission of India announced on Wednesday that seizures related to the upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have surpassed ₹1,000 crores. In Tamil Nadu, the total seized items amount to ₹1,262 crores, which includes cash, gold, liquor, and drugs. Notably, ₹543 crores in cash were seized during vehicle checks by surveillance teams. In West Bengal, seizures totaled ₹472.89 crores. The Election Seizure Management System (ESMS) was implemented on February 26, 2026, to enhance monitoring efforts. The Commission emphasized the importance of ensuring that ordinary citizens are not inconvenienced during inspections and has set up District Grievance Committees to handle any complaints. Both states are scheduled to vote on April 23, 2026, with results to be announced on May 4, 2026.
