Axiom Space has unveiled the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), an innovative inner layer for spacesuits, developed in partnership with the luxury fashion brand Prada. This garment is crucial for NASA's upcoming Artemis III missions to the moon, where it will help astronauts maintain a comfortable temperature in the harsh lunar environment. The LCVG functions by circulating water through tubes that run across the body's major muscle groups, effectively removing excess body heat. Additionally, it features separate tubes that deliver fresh oxygen to the astronaut's face, ensuring that exhaled carbon dioxide is continuously cleared. A notable advancement in this design is the inclusion of a backup cooling circuit, enhancing safety by providing an alternative cooling method if the primary system fails. While it may seem unconventional to involve a haute couture brand in spacesuit design, Prada's Chief Marketing Officer Lorenzo Bertelli emphasized the company's expertise in garment fitting, design, and advanced materials. This collaboration not only aims to create a functional spacesuit but also to incorporate a stylish aesthetic, demonstrating that functionality and fashion can coexist in space exploration.
