Ahead of Telangana State Formation Day, Labour and Employment Minister Gaddam Vivek Venkataswamy announced the rollout of 200,000 new pension schemes starting June 2. The initiative, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, is aimed at improving welfare for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities. Currently, over 42 lakh individuals receive pensions under existing schemes, but with over 12 lakh pending applications, the government is under pressure to expand coverage. The new pensions offer ₹2,016 monthly for most beneficiaries and ₹4,016 for differently-abled individuals. The government is implementing strict verification processes to ensure only eligible applicants receive benefits, aiming to avoid the mistakes of the previous government, which allegedly failed to sanction new pensions during its 10-year rule. The rollout is politically significant, as the Congress party had previously promised to increase pensions to ₹4,000, a promise that remains unfulfilled. The government hopes this expansion will enhance social security and improve citizens' quality of life across the state.
