This trial aims to enhance security by having staff serve products directly from behind theft-proof counters. Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer is set to address the issue, emphasizing the need to protect hardworking individuals from theft and abuse. He criticized the previous self-service system as a 'shoplifters’ charter' that allowed theft to flourish. The initiative is part of a broader response to rising antisocial behavior in retail settings. Greggs stated that this is one of several measures being tested in select outlets. The urgency of the situation is underscored by the recent case of a Morrisons manager in Aldridge, who was dismissed for confronting a persistent shoplifter, prompting local MP Wendy Morton to label him a 'hero' for his actions.
