On May 10, 2026, Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected as the leader of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Assam Assembly, paving the way for his second consecutive term as Chief Minister. This decision was announced by Union minister J.P. Nadda, who noted that eight BJP legislators proposed Sarma's name during a meeting in Guwahati.
