Engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu are urging the state government to revise the fees for government quota seats, which have not been updated for nine years. The current fee is set at ₹50,000, and colleges are requesting an increase to ₹1 lakh to cope with rising operational costs, including faculty salaries. P Selvaraj, secretary of the Consortium of Self-Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges, emphasized that despite increased interest in engineering education, many institutions struggle to provide quality education under the current fee structure. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has suggested a fee range of ₹79,600 to ₹1,89,800 for these seats. The consortium plans to meet with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to discuss this issue before the engineering counselling begins, as approximately 2,45,220 students will compete for around 1.8 lakh seats in 465 engineering colleges this year. The need for a fee revision is urgent to alleviate financial pressures on colleges and to attract qualified faculty members.
