The Central Information Commission (CIC) has raised concerns over the lack of a formal status-tracking mechanism for tax evasion complaints filed with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) authorities in India. Information Commissioner Vinod Kumar Tiwari noted that this absence creates suspicion among complainants, who fear their cases may be settled or closed without proper review. Currently, complainants have no structured method to track the progress of their tax evasion petitions (TEPs), leading many to submit multiple Right to Information (RTI) requests. In a recent ruling, the CIC upheld the denial of specific details during ongoing investigations but emphasized that complainants should be informed of the broad outcomes once inquiries are concluded. The Commission has advised GST authorities to develop an online tracking system for complaints, which would enhance transparency, build public trust, and alleviate the burden of repeated RTI applications.
