The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has issued approximately 5.56 lakh Pink Saheli Smart Cards to facilitate free travel for female passengers, yet only about 5-6% of these cards are in use, equating to roughly 6,000-8,000 users. Launched by President Droupadi Murmu on March 2, this initiative aims to replace the previous Pink ticketing system established by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2019. The DTC is considering making the Pink Smart Cards mandatory for free travel by July, following a survey to understand the reasons behind the low adoption rates. The survey will seek to determine if the lack of usage is due to unawareness of the card, if female passengers are from other states, or if conductors are not prompting the use of the cards. Currently, the DTC is conducting surprise checks to monitor the situation. The previous government’s Pink Pass scheme saw over 150 crore tickets sold, and the current government has allocated ₹450 crore for the scheme in the 2026-27 budget. The DTC has reported losses of ₹14,000 crore, prompting a push towards a fully digital ticketing system.
