Allies of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) are advocating for Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to invite C. Joseph Vijay, the president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to form the government following the recent Assembly elections where the TVK won 108 seats, making it the single largest party. CPI State secretary M. Veerapandian highlighted that no party has a clear majority, and thus, Mr. Vijay deserves adequate time to prove his majority in the Assembly. He referenced the Supreme Court's stance in the S.R. Bommai vs Union of India case, which supports allowing time for the leader of the largest party to establish their majority. Other leaders, including Thol. Thirumavalavan of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and P. Shanmugam from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), echoed these sentiments, criticizing the BJP for allegedly using the Governor to delay the formation of the government. Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan also emphasized the need to respect the people's verdict, stating that not inviting Mr. Vijay would disrespect the mandate given by the electorate. The political landscape remains tense as 233 elected members are yet to take their oaths, raising concerns about democracy in Tamil Nadu.
