On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet of India approved two significant semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), with a total investment of nearly ₹4,000 crore (approximately $480 million USD). Crystal Matrix Limited will invest ₹3,068 crore to produce gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor chip wafers, primarily for mini and micro light-emitting diode display modules. Meanwhile, Suchi Semicon Limited, which already operates an outsourced assembly and testing (OSAT) unit in Surat, Gujarat, will receive ₹868 crore to package semiconductor chips used in various electronic appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners. These projects mark the final approvals in the first phase of ISM, which aims to bolster India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. With this approval, the government has sanctioned a total of 12 projects under the ISM, amounting to a cumulative investment of ₹1.64 lakh crore (approximately $19.6 billion USD). The ISM, launched in December 2021, is designed to enhance India's position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
