The Bhairon Marg underpass construction in New Delhi, which has faced significant delays, is now projected to be completed by February 2024. The project, also referred to as Underpass Number 5, was halted when a precast concrete box sank due to flooding from the nearby Yamuna River. Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Singh Verma confirmed that work has resumed and is progressing well. Once operational, the underpass will ease traffic congestion for commuters on the Ring Road, particularly around Bhairon Marg, Sarai Kale Khan, and ITO. Currently, half of the underpass is open for traffic, while temporary diversions are in place to manage ongoing congestion. The revised design of the underpass will limit it to light motor vehicles and reduce its height from 5.5 meters to 3.9 meters, allowing for a two-lane corridor instead of three. PWD officials are focusing on stabilizing the soil under the box structures and aim to complete the box-pushing work before the upcoming monsoon season.
