Orthopaedic surgeries at the Post Graduate Institute-Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (PGI-YCMH), managed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Maharashtra, India, have been suspended for the past 15 days due to a contractor's refusal to supply surgical implants over pending dues. This disruption has left over 40 patients waiting for surgeries, with some waiting between eight to 30 days. Many patients are now forced to buy implants from outside, leading to significant financial strain. Civic officials have acknowledged the issue, stating that the contractor's billing exceeded the approved tender value, prompting efforts to resolve the dispute. Dr. Rajendra Wabale, the dean of PGI-YCMH, mentioned that while local purchases of implants are being initiated to mitigate patient inconvenience, major procedures like hip and knee replacements will remain on hold due to high costs. Health experts warn that such disruptions can severely impact patient care in critical departments like orthopaedics.
